MSP calls for more action on North East Business rates
9 March 2017
North East Labour MSP Lewis Macdonald has today criticised the Scottish Government after Business Minister Paul Wheelhouse passed the buck on the business rates revaluation fiasco after he failed to guarantee support for the 8,000 businesses in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire who will be hit by rates rises when they come into effect in April.
In a question to the Minister in Parliament he highlighted the case of constituents Graham and Linda Dawson whose business will face a 50% increase in rates due to the revaluation. Speaking after his question Lewis Macdonald said:
“Businesses in the North East will be disappointed with the Minister’s response. It’s simply not good enough to pass the buck onto the assessors.
“The reality is that the Scottish Government could be doing far more to support business in the North East who have already been hit hard by the oil and gas downturn.
“I have been contacted by many constituents who have major concerns about the impact these rates will have on their businesses.
“It’s time Ministers took responsibility for the rates revaluation fiasco and find a way to support all businesses across the North East through this difficult time.”
