Get the job finished first, says MSP

. North East Labour MSP Lewis Macdonald today urged the Scottish Government and the contractors building the AWPR to concentrate on finishing the road, before squabbling about who should pay for what.

His comments were made in response to reports that Aberdeen Roads Limited has made claims to the value of £350m against the Scottish Government in addition to the fixed-price contract for the bypass of £745m. This takes the contractors’ calculation of the total costs of the project to £1.1bn.

Lewis Macdonald said:

“The contractors and the Scottish Government must focus on getting the job finished first. They owe it to the people of Aberdeen and the North East, who have been waiting a very long time to use the AWPR.

"Clearly, when the road is finally open, there will be questions for both the contractors and the Scottish Government, about both the costs of the project and the contract Ministers put in place.

“Scottish taxpayers need protection from the consequences of the Carillion culture, of bidding low and suing high.

“In the meantime, there is only one right focus for all concerned: without compromising the safety of either workers or future road users, get the job done.”
